Maybe I'm being overly dramatic when I say that Logan changed me, but if you were there when I met him maybe you'd understand. When I met Logan Bellville he was the same age I was when I died. He was tall, broad shouldered, and had these bright blue eyes that just hit you when you looked at them. His face was absolutely gorgeous; everything about him seemed to glow. His hair was long and messy in that style I loved. He looked like an angel should look, which was odd because even though I'd been dead for two days I still hadn't seen a real angel yet so I had no idea what they actually looked like.
I went up to the top of the roof to see what was happening, but then I couldn't handle it. I didn't want to watch this beautiful boy jump off the roof and kill himself. I know I wasn't supposed to, but I stepped in.
"Logan Bellville," I said. He turned and I was smitten.
"Who are you?" He asked. That's when I realized that I was still wearing the stilts and the cloak and everything.
"Oh," I said and pushed back the hood. "I, um." Not one of my shining moments.
"Are you here to kill me, 'cause I'm not dead yet."
"No, I- Well, yes," I stammered. I was never good at talking to guys. I stepped down off my stilts and walked toward him, but then he took a step back and he was already close to the edge, so I stopped. "Don't jump," I said.
"You're here to tell me not to kill myself? Aren't you, like, the grim reaper?"
"No! Well, yes, but I don't want you to die."
"Right," he said. "You're the grim reaper and you don't want me to jump off." I don't know what he thought was going on at that point. Maybe I looked like a kid in an elaborate costume, but I think he knew I was for real.
"Yeah," I said. I rubbed the back of my neck like I do when I'm nervous.
"You're not going to try to trick me into jumping?" He asked.
"Why would I do that?"
"Well, uh, I was having second thoughts-"
"Perfect!" I said. I looked up at him and he sighed. He turned his head away and stared at the city like I used to do out my window. The tall buildings, the bright lights, it's like an alien world if you're not used to it.
"You want to know why I was gonna jump?" He asked. "The TV broke."
"You were going to kill yourself over a…" I couldn't fathom it.
"Yeah," he said. "I guess I was. It was just the last straw, you know? After everything else…" He suddenly turned to me. "You're dead, right? How did you die?"
I unbuttoned the top few buttons and showed him. There's still the hole, all the way through my chest. It's kind of gross, actually. Everyone who's dead looks exactly like they did when they died, and I died with a bullet hole through my chest.
"Whoa," he said. "That's so gross."
"I was shot," I said while I buttoned up my shirt. The shirt was something I picked out while in the underworld so I wouldn't have to wear the unprofessional looking t-shirt and jeans. They'd tried to give me a tie too, but I didn't take it.
"So if I jump off, I'll spend eternity looking like…" I nodded and he frowned. "Maybe I'll slit my wrists or something. Do you mind coming to my apartment?" So here I was, being invited back to a guy's apartment for the first time and it's so I can watch him kill himself.
"Sure," I finally said. I followed Logan down the stairs to his apartment, which was a one room little dump stuffed with things he probably didn't need. The table was low and between the end of the bed and the couch so he could sit there since there weren't any chairs.
"Can other people see you?" He asked.
"No," I said. "No one can see or hear me unless I want them to."
"Oh," he said. Logan sat on the edge of his bed and then patted the spot beside him. I sat beside him and waited for him to talk. "Do you really need all that stuff?" He asked me.
"I don't know," I said. "Seems a bit much to me, but my boss said-"
"Your boss? So you're not, like, the real Death, but his assistant?"
"Intern," I said. "To get into Heaven you've gotta do these things like-"
"Getting souls, I get it," he said. "How many more do you need?"
"Ninety-Nine," I said. "Including yours."
"Wow," he said. We sat there in silence for a while before he started talking again. "So you're, like, new at this and stuff?"
"Yeah, sorry," I said. He laughed.
"Don't be sorry, uh, whatever your name is, I'm not sure I'm even going to die today. If anything, I should be apologizing."
"No, its okay," I said. "I've got-"
"Eternity, I know," he said. "You're not in any hurry to get into heaven?"
"I've only been dead for two days," I said.
"Oh, really?" He looked up at me. "Wow, how's being dead? I mean, you weren't planning on it, were you?"
"No, it wasn't on my schedule," I said with a laugh I thought was way too geeky. "Don't kill yourself," I said suddenly. I don't know where that came from, I just really liked him and I'd hate to watch him die.
"Why?" He asked. Our gazes met and I thought my heart was going to break if I didn't stop him.
I kissed him.
Gayness!
